Herat Emergency Humanitarian Relief

On October 7th, 2023, a magnitude of 6.3, one of the deadliest earthquakes in over two decades, struck the province of Herat, Afghanistan. The country has reported 2,400 people dead and over 2,000 people injured. Of those injured, two-thirds are made up of Women and Children. The health care system in Afghanistan is heavily reliant on foreign aid, which has experienced massive cuts in the last couple of years under the Taliban regime. The people of Afghanistan, the people of Herat, are in desperation for aid.

At the onset of hearing about the destruction caused by the Earthquakes in Herat Karnail wardak-ha district in 2023, MESSO acted immediately in pairing up with MEF to fundraise in being able to provide assistance. MESSO distributed $15,347 USD to affected families in the Herat Karnail wardak-ha. After surveying 158 households to identify the key essentials needed due to the destruction of the earthquakes, MESSO determined cash distribution would be the best form of assistance for the families to meet their daily needs.
