SUMMARY

The Golf Course Superintendent is a direct leadership position reporting to the club's Director of Operations. The Superintendent will be responsible for golf course maintenance and renovations, all grounds maintenance, and landscaping around the Clubhouse, Maintenance Area, and the parking areas. Responsibilities include developing and implementing weekly, monthly, and annual goals and objectives, including but not limited to agronomical programs, budgeting, managing, and assisting the crew, record keeping, irrigation, project work, fertilizer & pesticide applications, and water management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Recruit, interview, and hire capable individuals.
  2. Lead, manages, trains, coaches, motivates, and assists the team in providing exceptional course conditions and aesthetic surroundings.
  3. Develop the agronomical plan for the course and leads and assists in the implementation.
  4. Oversee and assist in the daily, monthly, and annual care and maintenance of the golf course turf, bunkers, grounds, ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees.
  5. Develop annual operating budget, monitors performance and expenses, identifies areas of concern and variances, provides explanations and recommendations, and adjusts.
  6. Oversee and controls expenses, including payroll, supplies, chemicals, and fertilizers.
  7. Oversee the leasing, purchasing, maintenance, and repair of all maintenance equipment.
  8. Direct and assists the staff in planting new and replacement flowers, spraying, pruning, trimming trees and shrubs, preparing soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements, and tending to high-stress areas.
  9. Direct and assist in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the golf course in compliance with all regulations.
  10. Design and develop landscaping plans and annual planting, including rotational design, to provide a pleasant atmosphere. Directs and assist in implementation and maintenance.
  11. Manage an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation system.
  12. Oversee and assist in construction, renovation, and reconstruction projects, whether performed by golf maintenance staff, other POA staff, or outside contractors.
  13. Oversee and assist in the maintenance of other club properties, including the grounds around the pro shop, open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage, and areas outside the perimeter of the course.
  14. Communicate effectively with the Associate Director of Operations and appropriate department heads on course conditions, set-up, play, and other matters related to golf play and the planning and execution of course events or activities.
  15. Communicate with relevant staff about any golf course maintenance projects, plans, or issues affecting playability.
  16. Provide technical, operational, and safety training to ensure staff meet health and safety regulations.

Experience, Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, and Education:

  1. Experience leading, developing, training, overseeing, and motivating a team.
  2. Knowledge and experience in golf course maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.
  3. Knowledge and experience of landscaping, plants, shrubs and trees.
  4. Understanding of pest control products and their applications.
  5. Understanding of turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications.
  6. Knowledge of irrigation systems, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.
  7. Understanding of the game of golf and the impact agronomic decisions have on playability. A Golfer/student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions.
  8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel.
  9. A bachelor's or associate degree in turf grass management is preferred. Related certificates, training, and experience are required.
  10. 5 years’ experience as a superintendent. Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions and managing all aspects of the golf course and landscape at the highest level.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Requires a valid Arkansas driver’s license and clean driving record with proof of liability insurance.
  • Have a current state applicator’s license or the ability to acquire a license.
  • GCSAA Certification is preferred.

Equipment Operation: The role requires the ability to operate various types of equipment, both motorized and manual.

Visual Acuity: Close, distance, and color vision, along with depth perception and the ability to focus, are essential for tasks like inspecting turf and operating equipment safely.
